Reuben Kincaid & Danny Partridge: Underrated Comedy Duo

The 1970’s had its share of legendary comedy teams: The Odd Couple, The Blues Brothers, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, Cheech and Chong. But one duo never pops up on any best of list. Over a four season run between 1970-1974, precocious 10 year old bass player Danny Partridge and middle-aged band manager Reuben Kincaid teamed up as an unlikely team in the hit ABC series, “The Partridge Family.”
Based around a family that is also a band, the group is led by teen heartthrob David Cassidy and his real life step-mother Shirley Jones, traveling around in a multi-colored school bus. In the pilot, Danny (Danny Bonaduce) recruits Reuben Kincaid (Dave Madden) to be their manger. Over the next 96 episodes, Reuben had to deal with Danny’s drafting in the Army, tutoring of a mob boss , desire to bring a whale in the band and other crazy situations in the family-friendly show.
The combination of teen idol, comedy duo and catchy tunes landed “The Partridge Family” in the top 20 for a couple of seasons. As one of the early TV shows without a father figure, Kincaid ably stepped in and guided the family through various hi-jinks and many run-ins with the pre-teen Danny, making them a formidable comedy duo. Whether Kincaid dressed as a fairy or the family bathing in tomato juice to get rid of skunk odor (does that work?), the series success depended on the chemistry between manager and red-headed bassist to deliver the laughs.
Dave Madden passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy that included appearances on “Laugh-In” and “Alice”. Bonaduce tweeted “Dave Madden was a great guy & like family to me. He taught me to drive a car when I was 10. One of many great memories. I’ll truly miss him.”
