Anchorman 2.5: The Super-Size Version hitting Theaters
One of the most extensive marketing campaign’s in recent film history continues with the limited release of the R-rated version of Anchorman 2. On Feb. 28 “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues: Super-Sized R-Rated Version” begins a one-week run in theaters with 763 new jokes added on.
What started as with Will Ferrelll dressed in character as Ron Burgundy officially announcing the sequel on the late-night talk-show Conan, the intense publicity almost wore out the film’s welcome prior to its release. A slew of Dodge Durango ads, Washington D.C’s Newseum exhibit, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream flavor, smartphone games, an “autobiography“, jockey underwear, even Will Ferrell appearing on random newscasts weren’t enough, so now we get an alternative version. Writer/director Adam McKay says “Every joke we did in the theatrical, we would shoot three or four alts to it. And in almost all of the cases, there was another really good choice.”
This is not the first time Will Ferrell an the gang put together a spiritual sequel, but it is the first this concept is hitting theaters. “Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie“ was assembled from unused footage shot during the original movie and followed the anchor team investigating an extremist bank robbers. Pieced together from a deleted subplot, the followup went straight to DVD on some editions of the first film.
McKay and company have no plans at the moment for Anchorman 3 or Step Brothers 2, despite a good story line. We did have a good idea [for a sequel], but I think the thing we’ll do instead is just do a different John C. Reilly-Will Ferrell movie,” says McKay. “That’s the bigger priority: Let’s get them back together, so we have two projects that we’re developing for them.”
What promises to be a darker and stranger cut, the extended cut will be 2:20 and will be included on the Blu-Ray release on April 1.
