Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

| On 22, May 2014

Plenty of news has been trickling out from the production of Man of Steel sequel, due to come out on May 6, 2016. Most recently, the title has been revealed to be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Director Zack Snyder has also revealed via Twitter Ben Affleck in his Batsuit and the new Batmobile.Kevin Smith, who seems to be privy to everything about this movie without receiving a paycheck, tweeted that the Batsuit colors are Blue and Grey.

In an interview, Snyder stated that, “Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.”

Most of the cast from Man of Steel will be returning in the followup, including Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet editor Perry White. New cast members include Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler.

Snyder described the casting of Eisenberg as Luthor by stating, “Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

In March 2014, the Illinois Film Office revealed that additional filming will take place in the Yorkville, Illinois area in late 2014. Some filming took place in October 2013 at East Los Angeles College to shoot a football game between Gotham City University and rival Metropolis State University.

Ray Fisher will be Victor Stone / Cyborg and Gal Gadot has been cast as Diana Prince / Wonder Women, both cameo roles leading up to the proposed Justice League of America film.

Academy Award winner Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto and Ray Fisher have also been confirmed in unspecified roles.

Other images have been spotted online, including several of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman alter-ego Diana Prince in front of the Google offices in downtown Birmingham, Michigan. No Invisible Jet or golden lasso, but it appears the set Gadot is on could be either Metropolis or Gotham City.

But the most intriguing picture to come from the set was tweeted by cinematographer Larry Fong; a playing card embedded in what appears to be a block of ice. Could Batman’s arch nemesis The Joker join forces with Lex Luthor in what is building up to be a character-rich sequel?

Batman v Superman Joker Ice

Instead of becoming an actual sequel to Man of Steel with Superman as the main hero, this film is looking more like a direct prequel to Justice League of America. DC Comics has been focusing most of their intellectual properties on television and they have been lagging behind Marvels 14 year head start with the X-Men, followed quickly by two series of Spiderman movies Fantastic Four getting its second reboot, the extended Avengers franchise (now at 9 films with a 10th in production), the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man

Batman v Superman is also scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016, the same day Marvel will release Captain America 3. By creating some major superhero team buzz, Warner Bros and DC Comics are essentially playing chicken with Marvel and forcing their hand to pull the third Captain America release away from their films opening date.

Despite the star power of Batman v Superman, Captain America has become a powerhouse in in the cinematic comic universe. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a huge success at the box office and more importantly has been the one of the most favored live action comic films with the fans. The first Man of Steel did very well financially, but the fans reaction was mixed at best and the controversy surrounding Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman has not helped.

One has to wonder why the rush to reveal several onset pic TWO years before a films release, especially in the middle of a very busy release year for Marvel-related films. Is Warner Bros and DC Comics trying to get some buzz going for their main franchise?

Director Snyder has stated that this is still a Superman film, with Batman as his antagonist. Wonder Woman and Cyborg will only appear in cameos, with the assumption their roles will be expanded in Justice League.

And we are still two years away from the film’s release.
