The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Despite Sony Pictures desire to film the two sequels based on Stieg Larsson’s novels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked Hornet’s Nest, lead actress Rooney Mara stated that the followup films were unlikely, despite her interest in portraying the character. Sony retains the feature film options to Larsson’s novels until December 2015. At that time the rights revert back to publisher’s and the author’s estate.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo screenwriter Steve Zaillian confirmed that Andrew Kevin Walker, best known for his work on the film Seven, is rewriting the sequels.

In November 2015, it was reported that Sony was changing gears with the franchise, hiring Stephen Knight to write a screenplay based on the fourth novel in the series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal will produce the film, but Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig will not be reprising their roles and David Fincher will not return to direct. Alicia Viklander has been cast as Lisbeth Salander.

In mid November 2015, Rooney Mara told E! “As far as I know I’m doing it until someone tells me otherwise. I’m doing it unless someone tells me that I’m not — and then I still might do it.”
