The film will take place 20 years after the original, when reinforcements of the original alien race arrive at Earth after finally receiving a distress call. The new film will focus on the next generation of heroes, including the stepson of Will Smith’s character in the original film, played by Jessie Usher. In May 2013, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin mentioned that wormholes would be used as a plot device in the films. Due to high salary demands as much as $25 million for a sequel, Will Smith will not be reprising his role.

According to the official teaser website warof1996.com, Will Smith’s character Col. Hiller was killed in 2007 due to a malfunction developing the alien technology for an advanced drone. His death was confirmed in a fictionalized CNN report in the film’s first trailer.

Titan Comics will be publishing comic prequel to the sequel that will be “a rich psychological prison drama”,
