Mad Max: Fury Road takes place during the 5 year gap between the first and second films of the series. Tom Hardy is Mad Max, but despite rumors,  Mel Gibson will not be reprising his role of Max Rockatansky.

“Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.”

Filming took place in Namibia between July 2012-December 2012 and ran over budget.

Thanks to the overwhelming critical praise and $110 million worldwide gross opening weekend, director George Miller confirmed at least one theatrical sequel is in development. Titled Mad Max: The Wasteland, the film will star Tom Hardy, who is signed up for three more films according  to Variety. Miller told The Playlist: “We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays (while making “Fury Road”), and writing all the backstories, they just expanded,”

Miller told Digital Spy that he doesn’t think Furiosa (Charlize Theron) will return in the followup: ““She’s not in the Mad Max story, but one of the stories, there’s an interaction between the two. But I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.”
