Based on the 1969 autobiography by French convict Henri Charriere, the memoir is based on his incarceration in and escape from a penal colony in French Guiana, from 1931 to his infamous final escape by using a bag of coconuts as a makeshift raft in 1941. The book was adopted into a 1973 feature film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman and directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. Dalton Trumbo and Lorenzo Semple Jr. wrote the 1973 script.

A remake was confirmed in October 2015.
