RELEASE DATE: TBD
DIRECTOR: Mark Romanek
WRITER: Glen Mazzara
BASED ON THE CHARACTERS CREATED BY: Steven King
PRODUCERS: Laeta Kalagridis, Bradley Fischer, James Vanderbilt
DISTRIBUTOR: Warner Bros. A prequel to the Steven King novel has been in development for a few years. Glen Mazzara, former showrunner on The Walking Dead wrote a screenplay that will be produced by Laeta Kalagridis, Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt. Titled The Overlook Hotel, it’s based on King’s original prologue that was cut from publication, telling the story of the Hotel’s original owner/ robber banner Bob T. Watson. Music video director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo & Never Let Me Go) will be directing. Despite his unpredictable directing career (he backed out of the live action Cinderella), he has directed a couple of episodes of Vinyl on HBO.
James Vanderbilt. tried to calm some fears that this will be a typical prequel. “You want a real filmmaker like Mark doing it… Honestly I think people will really be excited about it, because it’s not like ’20 Years Before The Shining!’. I don’t want to give too much away about the story but the way [screenwriter] Glen [Mazzara] cracked it and the way Mark has sort of cracked it, it’s completely it’s own film, which I think is super smart. It’s not like, ‘When Scatman Crothers was young, he…’ it’s not that.”
