In early September 2015, Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle told Deadline a sequel to his 1996 film Trainspotting will be happening.  “All the four main actors want to come back and do it. Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”

In 2002 Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh published a sequel, Porno, picking up on the lives of the original crew of junkies and derelicts, Renton, Begbie, Sick Boy, and Spud. Trainspotting screenwriter John Hodge has completed a script to the sequel. Ewan McGregor told EW in late 2014 that he is looking forward in shooting the sequel sometime in 2016. “It’s supposed to be happening in 2016. I did speak about it with Danny and I’m very excited by the idea of it. I wouldn’t have wanted to do it before, but in the last few years, I’ve completely changed my mind. I think it would be quite an amazing thing to make a sequel to a movie 20 years later, with all the same characters.”
