In September 2013, director Joseph Kosinski said: “The TRON sequel is still in early stages, it’s still in the script stage. So I can’t say if and when that would go into production but the fundamental idea of the movie is something I’m very excited about, it delivers on the ideas that we set up in Legacy, especially at the end in the last five minutes, so that one is a work in progress.

At the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, Olivia Wilde confirmed a new TRON film is in development, and that delays were because everyone was waiting for the right story to come together. The third film is rumored title is TRON: Ascension.

On May 30, 2015, in the wake of the disappointing revenue for the opening weekend of Tomorrowland, Walt Disney cancelled production on Tron 3. After the second film Tron: Legacy was released, Disney cut short the animated prequel series Tron: Uprising to only 19 episodes. Insiders are speculating that Tron 3 may still go into production after some of its other high profile projects, including Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book, hit theaters in the next few years and the mighty mouse is more comfortable with a live action sci-fi/fantasy feature.
