In the scene after Austin has been knighted, his band Ming Tea performs the song “Daddy Wasn’t There”. FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS star Bret McKenzie was an Elven extra in the first and third LORD OF THE RINGS films. Here he is in RETURN OF THE KING (2003) as Figwit, the fan-created moniker for his unnamed Lord of the Rings character (it’s an acronym for, “Frodo Is Great … Who Is THAT?!?”).
McKenzie was cast as the elf Lindir (who in contrast to Figwit is a character created by J.R.R. Tolkien himself) for the upcoming THE HOBBIT. His father Peter McKenzie played the role of Elendil in LORD OF THE RINGS.
McKenzie served as music supervisor for the 2011 film THE MUPPETS, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song “Man or Muppet”.
Composer Howard Shore as the uncredited Orchestra Pit Conductor in KING KONG (2005). Shore has composed music for dozens of films, including THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, ED WOOD and PHILADELPHIA. Shore was also the first musical director for NBC’s SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (1975-1980) Nominated three times for the Academy Award, he won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Into the West” from RETURN OF THE KING.
Composer Christopher Young appears in SPIDERMAN 3 (2007) as the pianist at Mary Jane’s theater when she is fired. Young has a long list of film scores, including HELLRAISER, WONDER BOYS and RUNAWAY JURY.
Johnny Depp based his role of Captain Jack Sparrow on a hybrid of Peter O’Toole’s character in MY FAVORITE YEAR and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
Richards appears in the third PiRATES film, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLDS END (2007), as Captain Teague, keeper of the Pirata Codex for the Brethren Court and Jack Sparrow’s father. Richards was meant to appear in the second film PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN”S CHEST, but there was no room for him in the story, as well as him being tied up with a Rolling Stones tour. He almost missed filming a scene in AT WORLD’S END following injuries sustained by falling out of a tree. In June 2006, director Gore Verbinski finally managed to make room in Richards’ schedule to shoot that September.
