A sequel is planned with Gareth Edwards returning to direct. Legendary Pictures is planning a trilogy. At Comic-Con 2014, Edward confirmed that Legendary acquired the rights to three of Godzilla’s past enemies from Toho: Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah.

The 2014 film marks the 60th anniversary of the franchise and the first to involve Japanese studio Toho since 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars. On May 22, 2014, it was announced that a trilogy has been planned by Legendary. Despite Edwards’ signing to direct the first Star Wars spin-off film, Edwards will return to direct further sequels.
