On June 24, 2014, Splendid Films released a statement that reads, “With Rambo V, Sylvester Stallone returns in his iconic role. This time he goes up against a Mexican cartel. Stallone describes the new Rambo as his version of No Country for Old Men.”
It was reported on December 1, 2015 that Fox is developing a new television series called Rambo: New Blood, focusing on the relationship between John Rambo and his adult son J.R.. The younger Rambo is a former Navy Seal has never appeared in any of the four feature films. Sylvester Stallone is an executive producer, but it is unclear if he will co-star in the series.
It is unclear how the series will affect development of the sequel film, tentatively titled Rambo: Last Blood, but Stallone will not be involved. In January 2016, Stallone told Variety “You know when you realize there’s nothing more to pull out? As an action film, I was very satisfied that it dealt with the Burmese situation. It had one foot in a current event, the longest civil war in history, 65 years at that time. It was so brutal, which civil war is, I was shocked they even gave me an R-rating. I didn’t want to compromise. I said, “This is probably going to be the last decent film of this genre that I’m going to do as a solo act.” When that was accomplished, I never felt the same willingness to do it again. There’s nothing left. When they asked me to do another Rambo, I said, “If I can’t do better than I did last time, and I can’t, then why?”
